the fact is familiar to any one who knows anything about printing.

ne attempt to get a type-perfect as distinct from a word-perfect text

is a struggle after the impossible. Something seems to have been said

on the alleged authority of Mr Noronha that there were mistakes on

every page of my Volumes, and that the whole might have to be done

again. What happened Mr. Noronha tells me was, that he was taliimg to

*lementi and told him that typographical errors were not to be av-

ad. Mr. Clementi asked what he meant by typographical errors, and

r Noronha explained that it included among other minute slips mis-

spelling of words, or letters out of place; then he added, "If you

insist on these being corrected you may have to reprint the whole book,

because probably they occur on every page". I do not think that the

estimate is just but, although during my verification I noticed a

good many, and corrected some in the corrigenda, I cannot charge my

memory by giving an estimate. If there is to be a"scrutiny" time will

show. But this is certain that if re-printing is undertaken you may

possibly be able to reduce their number, because the printers themselves

will be on their mettle, but eliminate/you cannot.

them

It will be convenient at this point to deal with what is supposed

to be the perfect work, from a printing point of view, of Carrington's

edition, as that has been referred to as the standard which ought to

have been attained. Now in the first place it is not accurate to say

that that edition is free from printer's errors, as I have come acroBS

a certain number. But there is certainly one important mistake, and one

serious error. In the Code of Civil Procedure. on p. 757 "Reference by

consent of Court" is printed instead of "Reference by consent out of

Court"; and in e. 11 of No. 1 of 1845 the fine was printed as $5 in-

stead of $50. But even assuming in perfectly printed, the conditions under which Carrington was printed must be borne in mind. One Volume

was printed in London where they have trained proof-readers (ofben University men paid a salary of £300 a year, and the second Volume took two years to print. Mr Noronha himself read the proofs at the rate, so he tells me, of 8 to 10 pages a week, whereas it was essential

work that the new Edition should be completed in a year, and we had to wrek at the rate of at least 8 pages ■ day. Mr. Noronha tafirst read the first proofs, but after a time finding that it took him away too much
